THE latest collection of songs from the poetic Dubliner Conor O’Brien was inspired by Vittorio de Sica’s great film Bicycle Thieves.
It’s perhaps that film’s realism which influenced O’Brien to write songs that are almost confessional in their introspection but where the sublimely precise lyrics are admirably devoid of egotistical melodrama: “It took a little time to be honest/it took a little time to be me,” he sings.
Deceptively simple arrangements make each song an inimitable yet integral part of a mesmerising whole.
Tracks Courage, Darling Arithmetic, the energetically rhythmic Little Bigot and Hot Scary Summer — the latter with the edgy lyric “All the pretty young homophobes looking out for a fight” — are among the highlights.
They’re songs that meditate — almost joyously — by one of the greatest Irish voices around. Don’t miss.
