Pakistan: Police shoot dead terror leader Ishaq mid-escape

PAKISTANI police shot dead terrorist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi leader Malik Ishaq yesterday during an attempt to free him from custody.

Eight of the “14 or 15” attackers and six of Mr Ishaq’s imprisoned supporters were killed by gunfire in an assault on a police convoy that was taking Mr Ishaq to court.

The dead included two of Mr Ishaq’s sons and his deputy Ghulam Rasool.

Mr Ishaq had been arrested on Monday on suspicion of involvement in the sectarian killing of two Shi’ite Muslims.

Official accounts of the incident differed in several details.

One said that as officers tried to transfer the feared leader and five of his men from a prison in the eastern city of Multan, gunmen ambushed the convoy in an attempt to free him.

Another report said that the convoy was returning from nearby Muzaffargarh after seizing weapons, explosives and detonators on information provided by Mr Ishaq and his associates.
