Wilson called up to Ashes squad

by Our Sports Desk

ENGLAND made one change yesterday to their squad for next week’s Ashes Test at Canterbury, calling up Middlesex’s Fran Wilson on the back of a number of impressive performance.

Wilson, with recent scores of 45 against Yorkshire and 64 and 55 against the touring Australians while playing for an England Academy side, replaces Amy Jones in the 14-strong squad in the only change from the one-day internationals between the sides.

Head of England women’s performance Paul Shaw said: “We have selected Fran Wilson as a straight swap for Amy Jones.

“Fran has been in excellent form with the bat for club and county this summer and in particular has put in a couple of notable performances for the England Women’s Academy against the Australians during the 50-over and two-day warm-up matches.

“There is no denying that the result of the Women’s Test next week will go a long way to determining the overall outcome of this Women’s Ashes contest.

“The series is currently well poised with Australia holding a narrow two-point advantage after the ODIs but we have a very strong recent Test record against Australia and this is certainly something that we will take into the match.”

Australia lead the multi-format Ashes series four points to two thanks to spectacular performances from Elysse Perry and captain Meg Lanning.

The visitors currently lead the contest 2-1 after winning the ODI portion and will be looking to tie-up the Ashes at the St Lawrence Ground.

The one-off Test — which starts on 11 August — is worth four points to the winners, or two each in the event of a draw and will be followed by three Twenty20 internationals worth two points apiece.
