Cuba: France strengthens ties as Hollande visits Cuba

CUBA forged closer ties with France this week as President Francoise Hollande visited the communist Caribbean nation.

Mr Hollande held meetings with Cuban President Raul Castro and his brother, former president Fidel, and signed co-operation agreements between French and Cuban universities and scientific institutions.

The French delegation also sought to encourage economic and trade relations, and Mr Hollande spoke at the closing of a business forum held by entrepreneurs from the two countries.

In a speech to the University of Havana, Mr Hollande stressed the importance of normalising realtons between Cuba and the US following Washington’s failed 55-year economic blockade of the island.

Meanwhile preparations for the first visit of Pope Francis to Cuba continued.

President Castro visited the Pope on his way back from the World War II Victory Day celebrations in Moscow at the weekend, later declaring he was so impressed with the pontiff that he considered returning to the church.
