FIREFIGHTERS facing a massive attack on their pension rights sat down yesterday with Fire Minister Penny Mordaunt in their latest attempt to settle an epic industrial dispute.
Union representatives were locked in talks with the Tory who took the reins from stubborn Brandon Lewis in a reshuffle last month.
Prior to the meet Fire Brigades Union general secretary Matt Wrack wrote to the minister detailing demands for revised proposals.
He advised Ms Mordaunt that the union was “always willing to meet” but added that talks were only worthwhile if the government was committed to addressing firefighters’ concerns.
Firefighters recently rounded off eight days of limited strike action to press their case against plans to raise contributions to “unaffordable” levels and raise their retirement age.
The FBU warns that this could force younger people to opt out of the scheme and threaten older officers with a massively reduced pension if they are deemed unfit to do the physically demanding job until the age of 60.
