Outdoor construction staff at increasing risk of cancer

Construction staff forced to work outdoors are at increased risk of skin cancer, builders’ union Ucatt has warned.

Building workers often work in blazing sunshine, exposing them to UV rays which can cause skin cancer.

New figures published by Public Health England reveal that the number of hospital admissions for skin cancer has risen by 41 per cent in five years, from 87,665 in 2007 to 123,808 in 2011.

The union is advising building workers to keep a top on and use sun cream.

General secretary Steve Murphy said: “It is vital that workers and employers put in place simple measures to ensure that they do not suffer skin damage, which could cause skin cancer later in life.”
