Council struggle to fund elderly care

Councils will have to divert £1.1 billion from services such as libraries and fixing potholes because of the “escalating” cost of caring for the elderly, a new report published today has warned.

The Local Government Association said funding cuts were adding to financial pressures on councils in England.

Leaders said core government funding for 2015/16 was being cut by 8.8 per cent, leaving local authorities having to find extra money.
