‘Party of the NHS’ claim is mocked

LABOUR laughed off Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s claim yesterday that the Tories were now the “party of the NHS.”

Despite fears that the NHS faces a £2 billion black hole, Mr Hunt claimed that the Tories had promised more funding than any other party for two elections in a row.

“The true party of the NHS insists on high standards for patients in every corner of the NHS, however tough and challenging that might be,” he said.

It followed a declaration from Chancellor George Osborne that the Tories were the party of working people.

But shadow public health minister Andrew Gwynne pointed out that the NHS had only been going backwards for five years under the Tories, adding: “You can’t be the party of the NHS when you’ve made it harder to see a GP, pushed up waiting lists and plunged hospitals into financial crisis.”
