Trade unionists visit Ecuador to back sacked union leader

GLOBAL trade union leaders arrived in Ecuador today to back air cabin crew member Jimena Lopez in her fight against her unjust sacking by the LAN Ecuador airline.

The four-day mission will mirror worldwide union rallies and meetings to back Ms Lopez on International Women’s Day — March 8 — including a meeting with the Ecuadorian government, which supports her reinstatement.

International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) women transport workers’ co-ordinator Alison McGarry explained: “Jimena is general secretary and founder of the Aeroplane Workers Union.

“She was sacked by LAN Ecuador — part of the Latam holdings group, the largest airline in Latin America — following a successful trade union recruitment drive.

“That dismissal was not only a clear attack on her, but also unconstitutional, as the national government has stated.

“The call has gone out to Latam chief executive Enrique Cueto Plaza: Jimena must be reinstated.”
