Corbyn ‘will end benefit penalties for young’

LABOUR will commit to ending benefit penalties for young people if Jeremy Corbyn is elected leader, the leftwinger will announce tonight.

Under-25s are currently only eligible for £57.90 in jobseeker’s allowance — significantly lower than the standard rate of £73.10. The Tory government is also pushing young people off other welfare measures including housing benefit and young workers will not be covered by George Osborne’s new statutory “living” wage.

But Mr Corbyn, who will also pledge to reintroduce the education maintenance allowance for sixth-formers, will set out equalisation measures as part of his Vision for Britain 2020 youth strategy.

In a speech tonight in central London, where he will be speaking alongside Young Labour and National Union of Students activists Shelly Asquith and James Elliott, Mr Corbyn will also pledge to support more autonomy within the party for Young Labour.

The leadership front-runner has already pledged to axe university tuition fees.
