Ian Sinclair reviews '22 Strings'

Seckou Keita 22 Strings (ARC Music) 4/5

HAILING from Senegal but now based in Nottingham, Seckou Keita is a master of the kora, the 21-stringed African harp.

Taking its title from the legend that says the original kora had 22 strings, the album is a mesmerising set of quietness and gentle beauty.

“I want everyone who listens to it to think they’ve got more time than they realised in life,” Keita has remarked about the record.

Keita lends his deep vocals to three tracks. Opener The Path from Gabou is presumably inspired by his homeland’s rural community of the same name, while the closing track is a terrific, driving wig-out.

Keita’s work has perhaps a lot in common with the legendary Malian kora player Toumani Diabate, especially the brilliant 2005 album he made with guitarist Ali Farka Toure, In the Heart of the Moon.

All in all, an unmissable collection.
