Occupation forces delay to south London eviction

THE OCCUPATION of a south London social housing estate successfully stopped the eviction of a resident yesterday.

Residents of the Guinness Estate in Brixton had barricaded themselves inside an empty flat to prevent an assured shorthold tenant being booted out.

They ended the occupation after Guiness announced they would delay the eviction.

Campaigner Betiel Mehari said: “In the past Guinness have tried to clean their hands of us, telling us to go to get help from the council.

“But the council are overseeing this regeneration and are giving us nothing.”

Ms Mehari said the council had offered tenants secure housing on the condition they move out of London.

“We will not negotiate, we demanded to be housed by Guinness in our borough.

“We are telling them we won’t move until we get rehoused in the local area.”

Campaigners say that since the protests started Guiness has closed its housing offices, despite a “promise” to listen to residents’ needs.

The residents plan to join a Radical Housing Demonstration at City Hall on Monday demanding that Mayor Boris Johnson funnels money into social housing.
