COMPANIES are being paid by power supplier National Grid not to use electricity during periods of peak demand this winter to avoid potential blackouts, union GMB warned yesterday.
Customers are funding the payments to business users who agree to shut down during peak winter usage.
Peaks can occur eight to 10 days a month, particularly during periods of low wind-power generation.
GMB national secretary Brian Strutton said the policy was a “bonkers” response to the threat of winter blackouts.
“That and bringing unused, inefficient power production back into operation are the special measures National Grid, as system controller, is being forced to rely on to keep the lights on and the cost is added to consumers’ bills.”
He said ministers need to “urgently get a grip” on the scandal.
