THREE hundred lift maintenance engineers celebrated victory yesterday after bosses compromised on the use of controversial “spy in the cab” tracking devices which measure workload and mileage.
The engineers work from depots in Chertsey in Surrey, Gateshead in Tyne and Wear, Glasgow, Keighley in Yorkshire and Warrington in Cheshire.
They travel the country maintaining lifts and escalators for Finnish firm Kone. Contracts include Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
As reported by the Star, workers walked out on Wednesday last week in protest against the trackers, which they said were unreliable and inaccurate. Unions at Kone in Finland expressed solidarity.
Engineers’ union Unite has now won solid “safeguards” over use of the trackers.
“This is a successful outcome that could have only been achieved by the 100 per cent solidarity shown by our members during the course of this dispute,” said Unite national officer Linda McCulloch.
