Johnston slashes 19 more jobs in Yorkshire

Yorkshire Post sees further redundancies

REGIONAL newspaper group Johnston Press announced yet more redundancies yesterday.

The Edinburgh-based firm - which owns more than 250 newspapers and magazines - informed staff in a video announcement by chief executive Ashley Highfield.

He said the company needed further cost-cutting due to "changing demands" of readers and advertisers.

The group will slash 19 more posts in Yorkshire, where editorial positions have already been cut from 180 to 60.

An NUJ spokeswoman said: "Our members have been left shocked by today's announcement. It's difficult to see how further job losses, which leave newsrooms struggling to function, are the way forward.

"Staffing is already at crisis point, leading to excessive hours and workloads and rock-bottom morale, as evidenced in a recent stress survey by the NUJ."
