MP’s detention without trial ‘violates Geneva Convention’

ISRAEL has placed a Palestinian MP in six months’ detention without trial, according to the MP’s lawyer.

Khalida Jarrar (right), a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was seized at her home near Ramallah on Thursday morning.

Palestinian Prisoners Society leader Fared Qaddura said that the arrest in Israeli-occupied Palestine was probably in revenge for Ms Jarrar’s refusal to comply with an order to move from Ramallah to Jericho.

She is being held under “Israeli administrative detention,” which can last for six months.

Israel Defence Forces officials said that Ms Jarrar had been taken into custody because of concerns “about the safety and security of the region.”

She is one of 16 Palestinian MPs currently held in Israeli prisons.

The Communist Party of Israel said that her detention violated the Geneva Convention, as did the initial order for her to relocate, which, under international law, amounts to the transfer of a person from one occupied territory to another.
