LABOUR is in danger of abandoning a pledge to run old-age care on the basis of the NHS, delegates warned the Unison conference yesterday.
A motion unanimously passed by delegates warned that Tory plans to integrate the health service with social care would be used as a smokescreen for cuts.
It praised Labour’s plan for “whole-person care” and the party’s consideration of making care free at the point of need.
But delegates warned that this pledge could be axed, along with other populist policies pursued by former leader Ed Miliband.
LGBT committee member Deirdre Costigan said: “We need to make sure Labour are beefing up their policies and not watering down exactly the sort of thing that ordinary people wanted them to put out.”
In a moving address, Kirklees delegate Dave Ellis pleaded: “I don’t want my daughter to have to put herself through a hard life having to care for me so that this government can make cuts and provide care on the cheap.”
