AUTHORITIES in the Chinese city of Tianjin closed the site of Wednesday’s explosion yesterday over contamination fears, as the death toll increased to 112.

Some 95 people, including dozens of firefighters, were listed missing, in addition to the more than 700 injured in the huge explosions in the world’s tenth-biggest port.

Authorities confirmed that there were “several hundred” tons of toxic sodium cyanide T the site at the time of the blasts, in breach of rules limiting the warehouse to storing no more than 10 tons at a time.

City officials have ordered a city-wide check for any potential safety risks and violations of fire rules, mandating suspension of operations for factories that cannot immediately comply with safety rules.

The country’s top prosecuting office said yesterday that it was setting up a team to investigate possible offences related to the massive blasts, including dereliction of duty.
