Unions slate railway plan

THE Con-Dems have been accused trying to curry favour in northern England as they lay out costly plans today to improve regional transport.

But Chancellor George Osborne and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s so-called Northern Powerhouse and Northern Futures plans were rubbished as “pie in the sky” by transport unions.

“The plans are fanciful in the extreme. What they describe as HS3 is really just tinkering with the signalling,” said train drivers’ union Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan.
