TEENAGE girls have made a heart-throb out of Ed Miliband after starting a “Milifandom” campaign in response to negative portrayals of him in the right-wing press.
The Labour leader’s recent popularity boost was in part fuelled by 17-year-old Abby, who lobbied on social media in his favour despite being not yet of voting age.
The college student tweeted that she and her peers were “all fed up with Rupert Murdoch bullying Ed.”
Mr Murdoch was reported this week to have lambasted his tabloid journalists for not criticising Mr Miliband enough.
But Abby also said that she felt Mr Miliband was the only candidate that cared about young people’s needs.
Mr Miliband welcomed Abby to the Labour Party and added: “It’s good to hear young people who care about politics speaking up for the things they believe in.”
The Labour leader’s young fans have even taken to adding his name to their lists of celebrity crushes, alongside former One Direction singer Zayn Malik and actor Tom Hiddleston.
