LOUIS VAN GAAL has insisted Manchester United’s 4-0 drubbing at the hands of MK Dons on Tuesday night came as no surprise to him.
The mid-table League One side dispatched the Dutchman’s new team with ease in the progress to the League Cup.
“I am not shocked because I know what can happen,” he said. “A new team is not built in one month.
“I also think Milton Keynes played very well, very aggressively and they had a little bit of luck with the goals.
“And we had nine injuries. We also had to play within 48 hours so I could not play with the same squad as on Sunday.”
At the weekend the Red Devils could only manage a 1-1 draw with Sunderland, while Van Gaal’s first competitive game in chance was an embarrassing 2-1 Old Trafford defeat at the hands of Swansea.
The Dutchman asked fans to not to lose faith in the side — which could only manage seventh in the league last season despite being champions the year before.
“It’s difficult for the fans, I know that, but they have to believe in our philosophy,” he said.
“At the end, they can judge, but not now. I hope they shall maintain their confidence in the club and in our philosophy because that philosophy takes time.
“We are building up a team which you can’t make in one month, even one year.”
MK Dons boss Karl Robinson cut a different figure as he insisted the decade-old club “is going places.”
He said: “I’m shocked. I know everyone is going to write about Manchester United and I think that’s a bit unfair.”
Van Gaal will be hoping for his first win when Manchester United go to newly promoted Burnley on Saturday.
The Clarets have lost both their Premiership games so far — to Chelsea (1-3) and Swansea (1-0) — and were also knocked out of the League Cup Tuesday night by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.
