The guns fell abruptly silent at midnight on Saturday across much of eastern Ukraine in line with the ceasefire agreement.
But the rebels insisted that the new truce did not apply to the town where most fighting has taken place in recent weeks, the town of Debaltseve, where they have totally encircled Ukraine army forces.
“Of course we can open fire on Debaltseve. It is our territory,” said senior rebel commander Eduard Basurin.
And even the Kiev government admitted yesterday morning that the ceasefire was being “generally observed.”
Its forces had been shelled 10 times in the hours since the truce took effect, it claimed, but described those incidents as “localised” events rather than a widespread offensive.
