Album reviews with Ian Sinclair

Rainer Water (Kissability/Algebra) 3/5

THE DEBUT album from London duo Rainer — Rebekah Raa and producer Nic Nell —is an impressive slice of minimalist pop. Their simplifying mindset even extends to song titles, with all, mysteriously, one word long.

“We wanted to make something big but also intimate,” Nell comments and Single Nocturne sets the tone with the restrained power of Raa’s vocals ranging over crisp, poppy synths and beats.

“I love you to death, I do,” is the central lyric that swirls around the track, confirming Raa’s statement that the album is about falling in, being in and falling out of love.

With several devastating, James Bond-like ballads this is music to rue in the bedroom rather than to lose it to on the dance floor.

Electronica-infused indie acts like Love Inks and Boy Friend come to mind, though arguably Rainer don’t stand out from that particular pack at the moment.
