TWO Indian policemen were arrested at the weekend for the killing of a teenager during protests in Kashmir.

After two days of clashes, towns across the Himalayan territory were mostly quiet yesterday.

Police said they arrested two officers after a preliminary investigation revealed one had ordered the other to fire at protesters on Saturday.

Protesters had gathered on Saturday morning in the village of Narbal during a strike called by separatists.

Gunfire killed teenage student Suhail Ahmed Sofi during the protest, police said. However, relatives disputed the official account, saying he was killed in custody.

News of the student’s death drew hundreds more angry villagers to join the protests and troops tried to disperse them with tear gas. At least six police officers and four protesters were injured. Protests and clashes also erupted in half a dozen other towns and villages across Kashmir.
