Keith Brown and Stewart Hosie run for SNP deputy leadership

SCOTTISH cabinet secretary for transport Keith Brown and SNP Westminster Treasury spokesman Stewart Hosie launched rival bids yesterday for the party’s deputy leadership.

Their challenges came after Nicola Sturgeon stood down as SNP deputy leader in her own bid to succeed Alex Salmond as both leader and First Minister.

Mr Brown said that any further attempt to win independence should come “through the ballot box and through a referendum” but refused to specify a time limit.

He said the SNP should seek “maximisation” of the powers needed “for jobs, for greater equality, and for greater life chances, generally for greater social justice.”

Mr Hosie said the party should focus on the Westminster election in May 2015, but not as a “rerun” of the referendum.

“It is Scotland’s chance to hold Westminster to account,” he said.

The SNP’s 44,000 new members since the referendum will be able to vote in the leadership elections.
