India: Leading Aam Aadmi supporters ousted

Leaders of India’s Aam Aadmi (Common Man) party disappointed supporters at the weekend when two prominent members were expelled.

The party was formed in late 2012 on the basis of huge street protests against corruption, choosing former tax official and anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal as leader.

It swept to power last month in the capital New Delhi, crushing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party and taking all but three seats in the city’s 70-seat legislature.

However, sharp differences have emerged between Mr Kejriwal, now Delhi’s chief minister, and two previously close allies Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav.

He accused the two men in a leaked secret tape of working against Aam Aadmi and both were booted out of the party leadership at a special meeting.

Mr Yadav called the meeting the “murder of democracy.”
