REBELS ambushed a military convoy in India’s north-eastern Manipur state yesterday, killing at least 21 soldiers and wounding 14 others.
The ambush occurred as the three-vehicle convoy was on its way from a small town to the state capital Imphal.
Attackers used rocket-propelled grenades, automatic weapons and homemade bombs in the attack, setting fire to a truck carrying containers of petrol and diesel.
Helicopters carried the injured to hospitals.
Manipur, which borders Myanmar, has several active militant groups, but none immediately claimed responsibility.
In April, insurgents fired on two trucks carrying Indian paramilitaries in neighbouring Nagaland state, killing eight.
Separatist groups accuse the Indian government of exploiting the region’s rich natural resources while neglecting local development.
