Corbyn ‘on course to win leadership contest’

JEREMY CORBYN “is on course to win” the Labour leadership election, rivals are briefing.

Two surveys conducted on behalf of other candidates’ camps put Mr Corbyn well ahead in the first round of voting, the New Statesman reported.

Mr Corbyn had gained the nominations of 33 per cent of constituency Labour parties who have declared so far by yesterday afternoon, with Andy Burnham on 39 per cent, Yvette Cooper on 29 per cent and Liz Kendall on just 4 per cent.

But one survey reportedly puts the leftwinger 15 per cent ahead of his nearest rival on first preference votes.

Insiders have said his support base is largely made up of young members and new recruits who have joined the party since May’s election.
