CWU leaders back legislation to boost women bosses

LEADERS of communications union CWU backed legislation yesterday to ensure there are more women bosses.

The union welcomed a decision by the Scottish government to consider introducing laws to ensure boards of directors include a fixed quota of women.

But this development in Scotland is at odds with the Westminster government, which was among ten European Union administrations to block a proposed law for mandatory quotas.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes said: “Voluntary targets for getting women properly represented on boards are a starting point but there is a strong case for a more robust approach.

“We believe gender diversity quotas are necessary to make real progress where voluntary measures fail.

“The strength and versatility of our economy relies on embracing diversity at every level. It’s important women are properly represented in more senior positions, including on public and company boards.”
