Motherwell secured second place in the Premiership with a last-gasp controversial goal against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on yesterday.

The Dons dominated the match, with Johnny Hayes hitting the bar and Niall McGinn being denied twice when through on goal but they failed to turn their superior possession into goals and they were made to pay.

Stuart McCall’s side posed very little threat to Aberdeen keeper Jamie Langfield but with the game looking like it would end 0-0, Craig Reid forced home the winner with only their second shot on target to shock their hosts.

After the match, Derek McInnes criticised referee Steven McLean over what he described as a decision that he should be “embarrassed” with, as Langfield appeared to have been fouled by striker John Sutton in the lead-up to the winning goal.

McInnes said: “It’s a free-kick on my goalkeeper every day of the week and I think if he sees it again he’ll be embarrassed.”

The defeat was worth £240,000 in prize money and an extra two weeks’ break before Europa League duties begin.

Kilmarnock secured their Premiership survival and consigned Hibernian to a relegation play-off spot, following their 1-0 win at Easter Road.

Kris Boyd’s solitary goal was enough to secure all three points for Allan Johnston’s side.

Hibs will now have to wait to see who they will face in a two-legged playoff tie against the winner of Hamilton and Falkirk, in a bid to stay up in Scotland’s top flight.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle finished their season with a 2-0 win over  St Johnstone. 

Both goals came in the second half through Ryan Christie and Greg Tansey as John Hughes’s side secured fifth place.

Caley’s highland rivals Ross County secured victory in their final game of the season after a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle. 

Goals from Jordan Slew,  Yoann Arquin and Melvin de Leeuw secured all three points for Derek Adams’s side, with Lyle Taylor and George Moncur scored for Thistle.

Already relegated Hearts drew 1-1 with St Mirren in Paisley. 

Conor Newton scored for the Buddies with Dale Carrick scoring for the Jambos, as the Edinburgh side look towards next season in the Championship under new ownership.
