HUNDREDS of protesters clattered through Manchester city centre yesterday in an NHS “wall of sound” demonstration.
Activists blew whistles, banged pots and pans and chanted “Save our NHS” as they made their way to the Manchester Central centre where they continued their noisy protest outside the Tory Party conference.
“The NHS was born in Manchester, don’t let it die in Manchester,” warned march co-organiser and Morning Star campaigns manager Steve Sweeney, adding that the Tories were waging “class war and an attack on the NHS is an attack on the working class.”
Demonstrators could be heard inside the “ring of steel” erected as security as they chanted: “NHS not for sale,” and: “No ifs, no buts, no NHS cuts,” as they rallied alongside an ambulance provided by campaign group 38 Degrees.
The demonstration was part of the People’s Assembly Take Back Manchester week of action during the Tory conference.
