Party staffers fuming over private consultancy backing

LABOUR is mired in an internal row with staff after its general secretary backed a new private consultancy firm set up to tutor general election candidates, it was revealed yesterday.

Iain McNicol is listed by name at the bottom of a brochure for Labour People, the company set up in October to “help” the party by providing services to candidates in marginal seats.

Unionised staff based at Labour’s Brewer’s Green HQ wrote an angry letter to Mr McNicol — since uncovered by the Times newspaper — arguing that Labour People is being tasked with doing their jobs.

Labour People was set up by 29-year-old brand consultant Dennis Marcus, who once interned for former prime minister Tony Blair’s Faith Foundation.

It currently offers a pro bono service to candidates but staff fear that it could soon charge fees.

Mr McNicol is reported to have stepped down two weeks ago as chairman of the Labour People advisory board.

A Labour spokesman said the party does not comment on internal affairs.
