Minimum wage to rise to £6.70

THE MINIMUM wage will be raised to £6.70 an hour from October in line with the Low Pay Commission’s recommendations, it will be announced today.

The 3 per cent rise is the largest real terms increase since 2008 — but falls far short of the 50p hike suggested by some commission members in December which was vetoed by retail bigwigs who sit on the panel.

The larger rise, which was supported by unions and some business figures on the commission, would have made up for years of the marker falling behind inflation.

The apprentices’ rate will increase by 57p, the largest ever rise for this group, though it will still stand at a measly £3.30 an hour.

“Whether you’re on low pay or starting your dream career through an apprenticeship, you will get more support to help you go further and faster,” Lib Dem Deputy PM Nick Clegg crooned.
