Right-wing ‘back Corbyn’ stunt ‘an embarrassment’

RIGHTWINGERS are urging Tories to register as Labour supporters in a misguided bid to destroy the party by getting popular leftwinger Jeremy Corbyn elected as leader.

Toby Young used his Telegraph column yesterday to call on fellow Conservatives to pay the £3 supporter registration fee, believing it would give his chums the ability to “silence the loony left forever.”

The free school fanatic wrote: “Once signed up, you can play your part in ensuring Labour remains out of power for a decade.”

But Mr Young’s ploy caused an eruption of thigh-slapping mirth from Labour backers — who warned that his tactics would spectacularly backfire.

Mr Corbyn, MP for Islington North since 1983, is deemed a surprise favourite after he received 47 per cent of votes in a Labour List poll days before he got 35 MP nominations last Monday.

Campaign for Public Ownership director Neil Clark said that many true blue Tories would support Mr Corbyn’s policies such as renationalising the railways, bringing utilities back into the public’s hands and abstaining from wars — despite him being portrayed as a “wild-eyed extremist.”

He told the Star: “I think that when they look at his policies, it will backfire as he chimes with the majority of the people in this country, including Conservatives who are likely to live and commute in south-east England.

“Toby Young is part of this elite consensus that is hidden in a bubble and it is quite embarrassing how out of touch they are with public opinion.”
