Councils and unions lobby over cuts

WELSH council leaders and unions will descend on Westminster today to lobby their local MPs over the government spending squeeze that is throttling Wales’s economy.

Thousands of council jobs could be lost and essential services cut across Wales if the Tory cuts continue, they warn.

The delegation travelling to London on Budget day comprises representatives of the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) and the three unions with members in local councils — GMB, Unison and Unite.

They argue that the reduction in block-grant funding from Westminster since 2010 means that the Welsh government’s budget is now £1.5 billion smaller in real terms.

This huge reduction has hit councils across Wales, forcing them to slash £720 million from spending in the past five years.
