Mother can’t afford to appeal judge verdict

The mother of a disabled man made to represent herself in court vowed to challenge a judge’s ruling yesterday.

The woman was told she had used “undue influence” on her son so that he refused to take psychiatric drugs and electro-convulsive therapy.

At the Court of Protection Mrs Justice Hogg declared the decision of the paranoid schizophrenic man invalid.

The judge ruled the man’s “forceful” mother had exerted influence on him as his mental state would not allow for such a “complex decision.”

But the woman thought she had been unfairly treated.

“I didn’t use undue influence — I was just trying to make him understand,” she said.

“Mrs Justice Hogg just believed what she was told, but the man she described is not my son.”

She added: “I would like to appeal. But how can I? We don’t qualify for legal aid because my partner earns too much. But we don’t earn enough to pay for lawyers.”
