RMT union joins protest for disabled-friendly transport

RAIL union RMT will join disability campaigners in Glasgow next week in a protest calling for accessible and safe railway services.

Alongside Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC), the union will demonstrate outside Glasgow Central station at 2pm and outside Glasgow Queen Street at 4pm on Monday May 8.

The action has been called as part of the ongoing dispute over driver-only trains.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “The message we will be sending out is that disabled people should be able to travel without discrimination and for that to happen both trains and stations need to be properly staffed.”

Last year MPs revealed that 214 of ScotRail’s 346 stations are unstaffed, and over 30,000 trains are driver-only operated, which RMT has argued puts the travelling public at risk.

Mr Cash said: “Consistently RMT has asked what happens to a disabled person trying to access or exit a train, at an unstaffed station with only the driver on board?”
