Exam re-marking fees deny kids fair rewards

CHARGING to re-mark exams denies poorer children “access to fair rewards,” teaching union ATL leader Mary Bousted said yesterday.

Some schools pass on the full cost — as much as £48.60 per paper — to parents.

A motion passed unanimously by the ATL conference mandated new research into the costs with which exam boards lumber schools.

But Humberside delegate Colin Cranmer said that the number of schools refusing to cough up themselves was causing widespread concern.

“What if your family is on universal credit? What if you are a looked-after child?” he asked.

Ms Bousted said that constraints on resits and the drive toward “one-size-fits-all, time-linear exams” was making first-time exams more important.

“The grade awarded may depend on the questions asked and the teenager’s state of mind on the day,” she said.
