‘Remarkable’ campaigner Ray Davies dies aged 85

VETERAN Labour councillor and campaigner Ray Davies has died aged 85 of cancer, his family have announced.

“It is with enormous sadness that we confirm that Ray Davies died on May 7 following a short illness,” his family said.

“He was a remarkable man, with a large family and a huge number of friends and fellow campaigners, and we have been overwhelmed by the messages of support we have received from across Wales, Britain and the world.”

Davies was a keen Morning Star supporter, active in the Labour Party for over 60 years, a councillor for half a century and an inveterate campaigner on a wide range of issues including nuclear disarmament, Palestine, anti-racism, gay rights and Welsh devolution.

There will be a memorial gathering at Bedwad Workmen’s Hall from 12 noon to 2pm on Friday May 15 and a celebration of his life in Cardiff in July.

He is survived by his wife Wendy and his sons David, Steve, Tad and Carwyn.
