Cricket: England race to 68-run victory

Win over Proteas puts home side on course for semis

ENGLAND raced to a 68-run win over South Africa in the Women’s World Cup yesterday thanks to a record second-wicket stand by Tammy Beaumont and Sarah Taylor in Bristol.

Batting first, England thrived with opener Beaumont (148) and wicket-keeper Taylor (147) putting on 275 out of a total of 373-5.

The Proteas managed 305-9 in reply, with England’s fielders again failing to hold catches, making the match the highest-scoring women's one-day international of all time.

The win puts England in third place in the group stage table — the top four play the semi-finals — but they face a tough challenge on Sunday against defending champions Australia.
