Message of love takes on rise in racial abuse

FLOWERS and stickers were handed out outside London stations yesterday to show solidarity with people affected by post-EU referendum discrimination and abuse.

The “unity events” organised by community group London Citizens spread messages such as “Love London, no room for hate” to counteract racists’ exploitation of Britain’s vote to leave the EU.

Metropolitan Police Commander Mak Chishty, who leads on community engagement, said there has been a “slight increase” in hate crime since the referendum.

He said: “On any given day there are between 25 and 50 racial incidents in London. Following the referendum we have so far seen over 300 incidents of race hate crime reported to the Met.”

Only around 10 per cent of the incidents are potentially related to the referendum, he suggested.

Esmat Jeraj, who was told to “fuck off out of my country” on her way to work in east London last week, said: “We’re equal stakeholders of this rich and multicultural city, and are very concerned with the rise of bigotry and intolerance.”
