CANADIAN party leaders hit the campaign trail yesterday after the first debate of a marathon electoral campaign.
Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, New Democratic Party leader Thomas Mulcair and Liberal leader Justin Trudeau all addressed rallies in the Greater Toronto area.
The three, along with Green Party leader Elizabeth May, went head-to-head on Thursday in the first public debate before the general election on October 19.
Mr Harper spent most of the night under attack and was forced to acknowledged that the country “might be in recession,” blaming low oil prices for the slump.
The PM called the election last Sunday, triggering an unusual 11-week campaign rather than the standard five-week race.
Since coming to power in 2006, the Tory government has cut corporation tax, avoided climate change legislation, opposed environmentalists, increased military spending and strongly supported Israel and the Ukrainian coup regime.
