‘Bring back family reunification help’

GREEN MP Caroline Lucas will call on the government today to reinstate legal aid to help refugee families reunite amid the escalating refugee crisis.

The Brighton Pavilion MP is demanding a widening of the legal definition of the family so that it can include children over 18, siblings, grandparents and adopted children.

She said: “Refugees seeking family reunion often face extreme levels of stress and anxiety, but the current harsh rules are leaving them increasingly isolated.

“The government must urgently rethink the family reunion rules, to find effective ways for family members to be reunited without having to make dangerous journeys and risk being put in harm’s way.”

Legal aid has not been available to refugees seeking reunification since 2013.
