Bercow foils rebellion on Euro Arrest Warrant

Tory little Englanders were left fuming yesterday when a backbench rebellion against Britain’s involvement in the European Arrest Warrant was foiled.

Speaker John Bercow confirmed at the 11th hour that the scheme would not be included in a Commons vote plugged as an in-out vote on membership.

The arrest warrant is one of 35 EU-wide policing and justice powers that the pro-Europe government withdrew from last year in a bid to look tough on the bloc.

It now plans to sign up again, but in the end only 11 powers were up for the vote yesterday — and the rebels’ target was not among them.

Labour shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper revealed that she had been told it would be by Home Secretary Theresa May only a day earlier.

But Mr Bercow said he had spoken to “disinterested experts” and decided not to include all 35 powers.
