Fans’ fury at Sky for moving games

Fixtures rearranged giving supporters three weeks’ notice

SUPPORTERS of Premier League and Championship clubs were furious yesterday with Sky for moving fixtures for television audiences.

The rearranged fixture schedule was released on Thursday, with some of the new dates less than three weeks away.

A Leeds fans’ group are now urging supporters to boycott next month’s rearranged game against Middlesbrough at Elland Road while Leicester supporters will protest at their away match against Arsenal on February 14.

Leeds United Supporters’ Trust (Lust) branded the decision an “outrage” though Sky retaliated by blaming the late notice on legal action being taken by the club in a bid to prevent further games being moved for TV coverage.

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino has been fighting a running battle with the Football League all season over the number of times his club has featured in games screened live by Sky.

The Italian claims Leeds lose out financially and that the disruption caused by fixture changes is unfair to the club’s staff and fans.

“By moving the fixture at obscenely short notice, the Football League and Sky TV have once more illustrated where fans rate on the footballing scale of decision-making — at the very bottom,” Lust said in a statement.

“These custodians of [the] game are allegedly tasked with protecting its integrity yet have moved the match with no thought for the game’s lifeblood, match-going supporters.

“Football fans plan their lives around the league calendar and Leeds United is an internationally supported club.

“The Trust has been made aware of inconvenienced supporters from casual match-day goers resident in the city, through London-based season ticket holders unable to attend, to a group of 95 Norwegian fans whose pre-arranged return flight for the Saturday fixture departs on Monday afternoon.”

Leicester supporters’ group Union FS has the backing of Arsenal fans who are also dismayed at the short notice.

“Once again, Sky Sports have gone above and beyond in their efforts to put out matchgoing fans,” Union FS said. “No doubt they will point to the millions of fortunate souls now able to sit at home and watch this unlikely top of the table clash.

“Of course, the Arsenal game was not the only Leicester fixture announced for the upcoming games. March’s fixtures release includes changes to the game at Watford and at home to Newcastle too. Annoying, particularly for the Geordies who now have to travel to the East Midlands on a Monday night.”

Union FS are proposing a “five minute boycott at the start of the game where City fans remain in the concourse, watching the game on the TV monitors installed,” as well as banners of protest.
