Nicola Sturgeon: Chilcot Inquiry report delays 'a scandal'

DELAYS in publishing the Chilcot Inquiry report into the Iraq war are a “scandal,” Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday.

Hoping to embarrass Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy — a supporter of the war — she had called for the report to be published before May’s general election.

“The public still await publication of this report into the UK’s worst foreign policy disaster of modern times — I believe the delay to be a scandal,” she said.

Mr Murphy and his Liberal Democrat counterpart Willie Rennie said they too want to see the findings released as soon as possible.

Describing the Chilcot Inquiry as a “crucially important piece of work,” Mr Murphy said: “Clearly the precise date is for the inquiry team to decide but I think it’s necessary that the report is published soon.”

The inquiry, examining decisions over the 2003 invasion of Iraq, had its final round of hearings in early 2011.
