Kurds resist Turkey's latest troop crackdown

TURKISH security forces launched a crackdown on Kurdish citizens yesterday before the November 1 elections.

The Kurdish National Congress (KNK) party accused the government of occupying neighbourhoods in the southern cities of Cizre and Diyarbakir with thousands of troops backed by tanks and armoured vehicles.

It said police, soldiers and special operation teams have been deployed to schools and other state institutions around the neighbourhoods of Nur, Sur, Cudi and Yafes in Cizre and Hasirli in Diyarbakir.

A statement by the umbrella group said: “Special operation teams blockaded Sur district as of the early morning hours of today and opened fire on people at random in Hasirli neighbourhood.”

The KNK said six deaths had been reported so far and that police have warned that they will remain until the elections.

But it said that citizens were resisting the curfew in place since Saturday and youth were trying to prevent the police from entering their neighbourhoods.
