Arsenal playmaker Jack Wilshere was slapped with a misconduct charge by the Football Association yesterday after leading Gunners fans in anti-Tottenham chants during the side’s FA Cup victory parade on Sunday.
The 23-year-old England international, who joined Arsenal aged nine, repeated his antics at last year’s cup celebrations to mock the club’s fierce north London rivals as the players celebrated on a stage erected outside the Ashburton Grove.
However Wilshere’s expletive-laden Spurs chants, who again finished below their bitter rivals in the Premier League table, didn’t appease football’s governing body who had warned the player against a repeat of his singing in 2014.
On Monday, Wilshere apologised on social media for any offence his actions may have caused but the FA has now launched formal disciplinary proceedings and may choose to fine the player.
The FA’s statement read: “Jack Wilshere has been charged with misconduct in relation to Arsenal’s FA Cup celebrations on Sunday May 31 2015.
“It is alleged his conduct in making and/or inciting certain comments during the club’s open bus trophy tour was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute.”
The midfielder’s actions were defended by chair of the Arsenal Independent Supporters Association who dismissed the outburst and said that Wilshere “totally understands what it is to be an Arsenal supporter.”
Arsenal and the player have until 6pm on June 10 to respond to the charge.
