Hope Not Hate launches legal action against Ukip

HOPE Not Hate said yesterday that it is taking the first steps to legal action against Ukip after leader Nigel Farage accused its campaigners of violence. 

Mr Farage claimed on the BBC Sunday Politics show that members of Hope Not Hate and Unite Against Fascism “acted in a violent way more than once” at protests outside his meetings. 

Hope Not Hate lawyers have asked him for an apology for the defamatory comments or face a libel claim. 

Chief executive Nick Lowles said: “By trying to shut down legitimate criticism, Ukip are trying to divert attention away from the intolerent views of some of their activists and scrutiny of their policies.”
