Aberdeen university set to strike over cuts

ABERDEEN university faces strike action by staff over plans to axe 150 jobs while failing to rule out compulsory redundancies.

Lecturers’ union UCU began balloting members yesterday for strike action and action short of a strike.

The union says it wants to work with the university to manage the situation, but that its members will not sit back and watch jobs disappear and Aberdeen’s reputation for excellence suffer.

“The University of Aberdeen has a great international reputation and only last week jumped four places in the rankings of UK universities,” said UCU Aberdeen rep Rachel Shanks.

The ballot closes on Monday June 8.
